PICkit 3

The PICkit 3 replaces the PICkit 2. The PICkit 2 instructions work for the PICkit 3 as best we can tell at this point, with the following exceptions:

1)   The electrical interface with a target board is a bit different. See the "Using PICkit 3 In-circuit Debugger" wall chart that comes with the unit.

A 47K pullup on /MCLR will not work (as for ICD 2, PICkit 2). The instructions call for 4.7K to 10K. 10K works for me.

2)   There is no standalone device programming software provided/available for the PICkit 3.

3)   According to the PICkit 3 Release Notes, Section 6.2:

"On F88x devices it is necessary to pull the RB3/PGM pin low for in-circuit serial programming. This is due to a silicon issue."
The pulldown resistor value is not given.

We have not seen this problem.

4)   For the PICkit 3, the power-up timer must be disabled for in-circuit debugging (via appropriate configuration register).

This is not the case for the PICkit 2.
