Microchip is continually upgrading their manufacturing technology and the design of their products. The PIC16F84 and PIC12C508 are now listed as “mature” products in the current Microchip Product Line Card which means they are still available, but will be phased out eventually. Their replacements have the original part numbers with the suffix “A” added.
The new device will operate at clock speeds up to 20 MHz.
The “A” version will work in all the experiments in our books with no changes.
The “A” version has a 6-bit OSCAL value (instead of 4-bit). This value is expressed using three hex digits instead of two.
The “A” version will work in all the experiments in our books with the one change noted above.
